Yuki Bhambri. You are here: Home

The fourth Indian to win a junior Grand Slam title and the first to do it at the Australian Open, Yuki Bhambri today said he would now focus on graduating to the men’s circuit. “Even if I wouldn’t have won it, I had already planned to focus more on men’s tournaments, playing more in the men’s circuit. I might still just play the Grand Slams,” the 16-year-old top seed, who clinched the title after beating Germany’s Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas 6-3, 6-1, said after the match today. Today’s triumph put the Delhi-lad in a long list of former Australian Open junior champions who have made it big in the men’s circuit including Andy Roddick, Marcos Baghdatis and Gael Monfils.

The debilitating heat at the Melbourne Park may have left stalwarts like Novak Djokovic exhausted but Yuki said the searing temperatures were no big deal for him. “Being an Indian, in this way it’s kind of helpful. You can’t really get used to the heat, but you’re playing in similar conditions,” he said. Asked how it felt to be the first Indian junior singles’ title winner, Yuki said he wasn’t aware of the fact when he stepped into the court today. “Winning the Australian Open is obviously a very big achievement, regardless of being the first Indian.

Jackson Pollock Birthday. Handwriting Is on the Wall

Does bad handwriting matter? In some ways, maybe not. Like everyone else, I tap away on a keyboard for 99% of all written communications. But nothing can replace the immediacy and intimacy of words produced by a unique human hand. When Ronald Reagan decided to tell the world about his battle with Alzheimer’s, he wrote out his open letter with a fountain pen.

John Kerry’s handwritten letters from Vietnam are illuminating not least for the bold stroke of the first-person pronoun that stands out on the page. One of the most haunting documents I’ve ever seen is a fragment of Roman-era writing unearthed from the muck in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s nothing more than an invitation to a birthday party, but it’s the first piece of script known to be in a woman’s hand.

June 1989. John Updike, literature’s wide

John Updike, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, whose jeweled prose and quicksilver intellect made him for decades one of America’s foremost literary figures, died yesterday. He was 76. Mr. Updike, a longtime resident of Beverly Farms, died of lung cancer at Hospice of the North Shore in Danvers, said his wife, Martha.

“He was obviously among the best writers in the world,” said David Remnick, editor the New Yorker, Mr. Updike’s literary home for more than half a century. A master of many authorial trades, Mr. Updike was novelist, short story writer, critic, poet – and in each role as prolific as he was gifted. He aimed to produce a book a year. Easily meeting that goal, Mr. Updike published some 60 volumes.

Tuatara Reptile. KERRI RITCHIE: So there’s something special about Mildred? LINDSAY HAZLEY: Mildred’s 80-odd years old.

ELEANOR HALL: If ageing rock stars can do it, why not reptiles? A lizard-like creature in New Zealand has just become a dad at the age of 111. New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie reports, Henry the Tuatara showed no interest in the opposite sex until last year when he met 80-year-old Mildred. KERRI RITCHIE: This is a love story a long time in the making. Henry was 70 when he arrived at Invercargill’s Southland Museum and Art Gallery right down the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island.

He was overweight and had a raging temper. For the next 40 years, the testy tuatara kept to himself. Lindsay Hazley had set up the museum’s captive breeding program, and had almost given up hope, until he realised what was holding Henry back. LINDSAY HAZLEY: The poor guy had a tumour inside his bottom and we thought, “Oh we’re going to breed these tuatara,” and had great hope for the tuatara’s future. And when Henry arrived, we gave him a girlfriend and he attacked her.

Demint. US Senate panel endorses Susan Rice for UN post

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is endorsing Susan Rice as the next ambassador to the United Nations. The committee approved her nomination by voice vote. The action paves the way for her confirmation by the full Senate. A Senate vote had not been immediately scheduled.

Rice is considered a shoo-in for the position. Once confirmed, she would become the first black American woman to assume the post and would report directly to President Barack Obama as a member of his Cabinet. Last week, Rice told the Senate committee she would work to strengthen the United Nations as «an indispensable if imperfect» institution. Start Receiving PR-inside.com News Headlines per email. Obama Dance. Obama: A First Citizen in more ways than one

Michelle Obama (pictured right) wore a sparkling gold sheath dress with matching coat by Cuban-born American designer Isabel Toledo to the inauguration. Barack Obama was wearing a red tie and white shirt with his suit. Toledo is considered among the more avant garde US designers. Michelle has been noted for choosing unexpected fashion designers.

Moving day magic by 93 pairs of hands While the transfer of power unfolded at Capitol Hill, at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, another sort of miracle occurred: moving day. Between the time the Bushes left the White House for the inauguration and the Obamas entered it in the afternoon, the White House would look like the new first family had always lived there, with clothes folded in drawers, pictures on dresser tops and walls and stuffed animals on beds. The highly orchestrated quick-change operation, conducted by the 93-member White House residence staff, has no parallel. “It’s controlled chaos,” said Ann Stock, who was social secretary in the Clinton White House.
